How to measure the length of wire to wrap coils around a piece of wire?

I usually use a spool because if it's cut, it's always too short or too long and then it gets wasted.
It also depends on what gauge your base wire is.

I usually use at least 5 times longer weave wire than my base wire depending on the gauge. 24 or 26 gauge usually works well for this purpose with 18 gauge base wire. As the base wire gets thicker the weaving wire will become lesser.
